Information about the Lincoln Memorial
|
This memorial was
built to honor our 16th president.
Talk of the memorial began immediately after his death in
1865, but it was awhile after his death before the construction
ever began. Congress
ordered the memorial to be built in 1867 to honor President
Lincoln but it was delayed until the early 1900s. It cost more than 300,000.
The Lincoln Memorial monument is 107 acres, in Potomac
Park, Washington, D.C., built during 1914-17.
The building was designed by Henry Bacon and styled after
the Greek temple Parthenon.
It has 36 Doric columns, each one representing a state in
the Union at the time of Lincoln's death.
It was opened on May 30, 1922 on Memorial Day.
Inside the
building is a heroic statue of Lincoln designed by Daniel
Chester French and carved by the Piccirilli Brothers of New
York.
It is 19 feet tall and 19 feet wide and is made of 28
separate blocks of Georgia marble.
The murals were painted by Jules Guerin, and represented
major events during Lincoln's life. The names of the 48 states in the Union are carved in the
exterior attic walls. The walls are made of Colorado Yule
marble, and the tripods are pink Tennessee marble.
The Lincoln
Memorial is staffed from 8 p.m. to midnight, every day except
for Christmas. The National Park Service is open to answer
questions and educational materials can be purchased at the
bookstore, which is on the chamber level.
