Information about the Jefferson Memorial

Thomas Jefferson has displayed many positive qualities during his life time. A man of great honor, he was a politician, philosopher, architect, musician, book collector, scientist, horticulturist, diplomat, inventor, and third President of the United States. He left Americans with lasting ideas as well as a great body of practical achievements.
He played a role in the American Revolution, by establishing reasons for the colonies to break free from Great Britain.
Another great achievement included writing the Declaration of Independence. He attended school at the College of William and Mary, started a law practice, and became a representative from Albemarle County to the Virginia Legislature. He also led the new government as president in its early days of trial, and he saw to the country’s growth and expansion westward.
His draft of the Declaration of Independence listed actions by King George which violated the fundamental rights of colonists. Jefferson also presented ideas on basic rights for people.
The Declaration of Independence had great meaning to what all American soldiers were fighting for and why they were fighting, and Jefferson wanted to be remembered for his writing. His great library collection was the beginning of the Library of Congress. He wrote things from his heart and things that people would see as the truth. And for that people will always remember him as a great man that was willing to go the extra mile to accomplish his dreams.
Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 and he died on July 4, 1826. About ten years after his death a memorial of bronze was made in his honor. It stands at 19 feet tall, and weights 10,000 pounds. It’s located in Washington DC, in East Potomac Park. The building is a beautiful rotunda, encircled by 26 Ionic columns. A very broad flight of steps leads up to the entrance. The building which Jefferson stands upon is made of white marble. He is resting on a black granite pedestal that is 1.8m high. He is made of bronze and sits at a towering 19ft tall facing the White House in honor. The bronze memorial was one of the biggest accomplishments in his honor at that time. And today it is still looked upon in honor.
