Information about the
National Marine Corps War Memorial
Iwo Jima is a island off of the
mainland Japan. The US needed Iwo Jima for a emergency landing strip for the crippled b-29 bombers because the distance between their base Mariana and Japan was often to grate for the crippled planes to make it back. Also with the control of the island the
US could have more intensive and more air attacks on mainland Japan. Iwo Jima was needed by the
US but the capture of it would not come easy.
The overall assault lasted 36 days. First the B-24 heavy bombers shelled the island like they never have any
pave before. Then on June 1944 the carrier raids started. Then on February 19 the invasion began. Over 450 ships bombarded the island and after 9
a.m. the 4th and 5th marine divisions reached the Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue abreast. The sand made it hard for the marines to advance but they did. Then the Japanese opened fire but both of the division
accomplished their missions. The 4th division was assigned to take the Quarry and they did. Also the 5th accomplished its goal of surrounding the mountain Suribachi.
From February 20 through the 23 the 28th marines took over the Mountain Suribachi and had raised the
US flag. On the fifth day of fighting the 3rd division's mission of taking over the center of the island
started.
