Information about Holocaust Museum

The Holocaust Memorial Museum is America’s national site for telling the tragic story of millions of people murdered during the Holocaust.  This systematic persecution of European Jews by Nazi Germany happened between 1933 and 1945.  Jews were the main victims with six million murdered.  Gypsies, the handicapped, and Poles were also targeted.  Millions more including homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and people who disagreed with Hitler suffered greatly.
The Museum’s main purpose is to educate all people about this tragedy and to preserve the memory of those who suffered.  The Museum also encourages visitors to think upon questions raised by the events of the Holocaust.  “Why did this happen?”  “Why did people follow Hitler?”
Congress approved the Museum in 1980.  It is close to the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  The Museum’s founders hoped to increase public understanding of the history of the Holocaust through programs, exhibitions, research, and publications.

The staff of the Museum collected and preserved material evidence related to the Holocaust.  The Permanent Exhibition on the Holocaust spans three floors. Visitors learn the sad history by viewing more than 900 artifacts, 70 video monitors, and four theaters that include historic film footage and eyewitness testimonies.  The exhibition is divided into three parts: “Nazi Assault,”  “Final Solution,” and “Last Chapter.”
One display not to miss includes “Daniel’s Story,” a tribute to the children of the Holocaust.
By seeing an actual train car, a room full of shoes, clothing, bunk beds, and family photographs, the visitor relates to the people of the Holocaust.
