Fords Theatre

Fords Theatre is a national historic site. It was originally a Baptist church on Tenth Street in Washington D.C. In 1859 the forth Baptist Church was formed on thirteenth street, and it joined with the First Baptist church on Tenth Street, while it was being abandoned.
In 1861 John T. Ford came to Washington looking for a structure for a theatre. Ford leased the building on December 10, 1861 for five years with option to buy at the end of that period.
From its grand opening on March 19, 1862 was very successful. More and more people started coming when Lincoln attended the theatre on May 28, 1862. Later on April 14, 1865 while watching the play Our American Cousin he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. He was from there taken to the Petersons home where he died. After Lincolns death the theatre was shut down.
Ford's Theatre was restored again in 1968. The theatre is still a performing theatre and a museum. In the museum are photographs, clothing, the assassins gun, and editorial cartoons.
Ford's Theatre exists due to President Abraham Lincoln's love for the performing arts. The Theatre puts on musicals that have family vaults and displays life in America.  A man named Frankie Hewitt has helped Ford’s Theatre for three decades to have it renovated as a museum and also to develop new theatre works for America. Under Frankie Hewitt there was an association started which helps keep Ford’s Theatre open as a national treasure.
John Wilkes Booth played a important part in the history in Ford’s Theatre due to the fact that he was an actor and because he was a strong supporter of the Confederate States of America. Booth’s first plan was to capture President Lincoln and exchange him for
confederate prisoners. This plan failed when the president’s itinerary was changed as he did not want to travel on the road where conspirators were waiting. Booth then came up with the plan to kill President Lincoln at the theatre.
