Information about the White House

The White House was planned to be built by the Congress in 1792. The plans for it were designed by James Hobam in the Palladium Style. When John and Abigail Adams resided it in 1800, it was still not finished. It took eight whole years to finish it. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It is mostly made of limestone. The dimensions of the White House are twenty-six meters by fifty-one meters, and it has six stories and one hundred thirty-two rooms.
The British burned the White House in Washington in 1814. They rebuilt it with James Hoban’s plans. They renovated the entire house in 1901. Then in 1948, Congress reconstructed the building and this cost almost six million dollars. Then the house was taken apart and cataloged and then it could be put back together.
The second floor has 32 rooms. The President’s office is called the Oval Office.
If you tour the White House you can see paintings of Dolly Madison and George Washington from before the White House was burned.
