Information about
the Washington Monument
The Washington
Monument was authorized in 1848. The Washington Monument is
169m (555 ft) high and is one of the tallest structures in the
world. It is 17m (55 ft) at its base. The top is a solid
aluminum pyramid. The walls are made of marble that was
brought from Maryland and Massachusetts. The Washington
Monument has a stairway that has 897 steps going to a room
near the top. When visitors go to the top they can see 192
memorial stones that were donated by organizations, foreign
countries, and individuals.
The Washington Monument was built to honor
George Washington, the first president of the United States. It
took 30 years to build the Washington Monument. American
architect, Robert Mills, designed the monument. The building
was finished in1884, dedicated Feb. 21, 1885, and opened in
1888. The construction was halted by a lack of money during
the Civil War. A law in Washington, D.C., states that no
monument be any taller than the Washington Monument. Thus, it
is the tallest in the whole city. From a distance, one can see
rings. Many people say that the rings were from all the years
it took before the construction was completed. However, the
rings are really caused by the varied stratum of marble used
in the construction of this magnificent monument honoring the
first president of the United States of America.
