Information about Washington D.C. Union Station
 
 Overall Information

    The Union Station in Washington D.C. is a most remarkable and beautiful station. The station has 130 fabulous stores for shopping and buying souvenirs. The station is not only used for traveling purposes but for entertainment with the 9 screen movie theater, shopping and dining. There are seven restaurants for regular dining or for private activities. There is an Amtrak train and ticketing. When traveling you have 3 major companies to choose from, they are: Gray Line, Old Town Trolley, and Tourmobile, these companies can be used for traveling and sightseeing. There are special events inside the station seasonally.
 

History

    The Union Station opened October 27, 1907 and was completed in 1908. When the station was first built it covered more ground than any other building in the United States and it was the largest station in the world. The total area that the station occupies is over 200 acres and the train tracks cover 75 miles of ground. The ceiling was made from 22-karat gold leaf.
    The staff consists of over 5,000 members at times, and is larger at other times. The staff worked in such amenities as a bowling alley, mortuary, baker, butcher, YMCA hosts and group supporters, hotel, ice house, liquor store, Turkish baths, first -class restaurant, nursery, police station and a silver monogramming shop.
    The Union Station’s transportation would be used even by the U.S. Presidents in the 1900’s and then there was a presidential suite added to the station. The first president to ever use the station was president Taft, other than presidents including fame and royalty, such as King George VI, Queen Elizabeth of England, King Albert of Belgium, and Queen Marie or Romania. The last president to use the station was President Eisenhower.
     On January 15, 1953 the Federal Express Train went out of control on Track 16, it crashed through a newsstand and into the main area of Union Station. No one was killed in this accident, and in the main area there was little evidence of the accident. Today the Union Station still makes history as the most visited destination in the Nation’s Capital with over 23.5 million visitors each year.
