Information about the
Capitol of the United States of America

The Capitol of the United States of America has contained the meeting places of Congress for nearly two hundred years. Since 1793 when it was built it has been burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored. It is now known among the architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Capitol also serves as a monument to the people and government of the United States of America as it is visited by an estimated 3.5 million people from around this world.

Today the ground area of the Capitol is 175,170 square feet or about four acres. The floor area is around 16.5 acres. The Capitol is separated into five levels, four floors and a basement.

On the ground floor the majority of the space is taken up with spaces set aside to various congressional officers. On this floor visitors can see the Hall of Columns, the Brumidi Corridors, the Old Supreme Court Chamber, and the Crypt.

The second floor contains the Congress Chambers along with offices of congressional leaders. This level also contains the Rotunda, which has a gallery, National Statuary Hall, and the Old Senate Chamber.

The third floor allows visitors access to areas from which one may see the proceedings of the House and Senate when it is in session.

The fourth and basement floors are occupied with offices and machinery.
