Information about the
Capitol of the
United States of America
The Capitol of the United States of America has
contained the meeting places of Congress for nearly two
hundred years. Since 1793 when it was built it has been burnt,
rebuilt, extended, and restored. It is now known among the
architecturally impressive and symbolically important
buildings in the world. The Capitol also serves as a monument
to the people and government of the United States of America
as it is visited by an estimated 3.5 million people from
around this world.
Today the ground area of the Capitol is 175,170 square
feet or about four acres. The floor area is around 16.5 acres.
The Capitol is separated into five levels, four floors and a
basement.
On the ground floor the majority of the space is taken
up with spaces set aside to various congressional officers. On
this floor visitors can see the Hall of Columns, the Brumidi
Corridors, the Old Supreme Court Chamber, and the Crypt.
The second floor contains the Congress Chambers along
with offices of congressional leaders. This level also
contains the Rotunda, which has a gallery, National Statuary
Hall, and the Old Senate Chamber.
The third floor allows visitors access to areas from
which one may see the proceedings of the House and Senate when
it is in session.
The fourth and basement floors are occupied with offices
and machinery.
