Information about the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court is the most powerful court in the nation and
is the final authority in the judicial power of government.
The court decides if the actions of the states, Congress and
even the President are constitutional. One hundred cases are
all the court will honor a year. In many cases the decision of
the court has an effect on all Americans.
The Supreme Court is housed in a beautiful building that shows
social importance. The oval plaza fronts the cross-shaped
building of the Supreme Court. The building is made of
beautiful white gleaming marble. There is a broad staircase
that leads up to a colonnade of 32 exquisite Corinthian
columns. Also there is a marble spiral staircase directly
across from the women's room, at the Maryland Avenue basement
level. You can't walk on the steps, but you can see them.
Under the bas-relief there are words saying "Equal
Justice Under Law", and in the main hall is the massive
statue of John Marshal.
The court will only hear oral arguments at 10 and 11 A.M. and
1 and 2 P.M. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. This is
only done for two weeks of each month. They start on the first
Monday in October and continue through April. The court
convenes at 10 A.M. to deliver opinions in May and June.
Sessions are opened to the public on first come, first-served
basis. While touring the Supreme Court you must go through one
of two lines. One line is for people who want to sit through
all or just part of the session. The second line is only a
three-minute queue for those who wish only to see the
chambers.
There are nine judges that sit on the court: the chief justice
and eight associate justices. The president of the U.S.
appoints them to the court for life terms, but the U.S. Senate
must approve each appointment with majority votes. The Supreme
Court has complete authority over the federal courts, but it
only has limited authority over state courts.
The Supreme Court is the only court mentioned in the
Constitution. The third article states that the Supreme Court
is the top of the country's judicial branch, making it equal
to the executive branch (the president) and the legislative
branch (congress). The court has the authority to review over
broad classes of cases. The American system of checks and
balances is a system that is intended to safeguard Americans
from government abuses of power. But the final most important
jurisdiction is the power to hear appeals of cases decided in
lower federal courts and state supreme courts. This is known
as appellate.
The Supreme Court, the highest court in the U.S. is the most
important court in the nation. It yields tremendous influences
and makes decisions that often affect the feelings of all
Americans.
