The Old Post Office

OldPostOffice.jpg (69879 bytes)

The Old Post Office Pavilion is located on Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Streets, North West, halfway between the White House and the United States Capitol. It is D.C.’s first modern skyscraper standing 12 stories high. The Old Post Office was completed in 1899. After it was built it was criticized as looking like a cross between a cathedral and a cotton mill. As a result of the criticism there was a seven-decade struggle to save the building. It was rededicated in 1983. Also at the completion of the building it stood out as a symbol of prestige for the U.S. Postal Service. It was one of the city’s first steel frame buildings with a granite skin covering the steel to fireproof the building.
Inside the Old Post Office there is a tour of the tower. The tour provides visitors with the history of the building and a breathtaking vista from the 315-foot clock tower and a view of the Congress Bells.
The Old Post Office provides the ideal setting for a lot of special events like lavish receptions, elegant balls, and cocktail parties to sit down dinners, dances and much more.
