The Museum of Natural History is a branch
of the Smithsonian located in Washington DC on Madison Drive.
It is 2 stories tall, plus it had 2 wings added in 1960. It
holds a dinosaur hall which holds almost everything from a 90
foot Diplodocus to Scipionyx samniticus one of the smallest dinosaurs known to man.
They also have 2 interactive exhibits called the insect zoo
and the discovery room. You can buy separate tickets that
allow you to stay as long as you want. in the insect zoo they
have bugs from all over the world like a 1 foot long
centipede, a Madagascar hissing cockroach, and tarantulas who
are publicly fed almost everyday. In the west wing there are
birds, mammals, and sea life. Most of the preserved animals
were brought back from Teddy Roosevelt's African trip. They have
a living coral reef with many different species of sea life
and simulated waves. The basement has a exhibit called seeds
of change where it shows man’s walk from prime ape to prime
species. At the entrance a African bull elephant towers 13ft
in the air and weighs in at 18 tons. Its tusks alone was too
much for the stuffed animals to hold so they made replicas.
The
highlight of the second floor is the Janet Annenburg Hooker
Hall of Geology, gems and minerals, where the famous hope
diamond is held. It is a 45 carat or 10.9665 ounces which is
basically a fraction of its original size. Also the hall holds
earrings, other gems and very precious minerals.
