Word Problem

The National Art Museum (NAM) of Washington, D.C. holds art work from as far back as Leonardo da Vinci.  These paintings cost nearly one million a piece and sometimes more.  The entire NAM is made up of nothing but rooms the size of an average class room.  Each room has one security guard watching every move you make.  They also have a set of cameras for each piece of art work coming from every angle.

  • If each room consist of 8 pieces of art and every set of camera consists of 5 in all for each piece of art work, then how many cameras are in the whole room?
  • It costs $7.00 for one all access ticket.  If each room on the second floor has five different rooms and there is a different guard in each room and each guard changes rooms every 2.5 hrs and you stay in the museum for 10 hrs how many times will the guards change?  and how much money will you have to pay?
  • A group of 20 children and adults are going to The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden ice-skating rink on March 15.  Adults cost $5.50, children cost $4.50, and skate rental is $2.50.  If the group spends a total of $145.00 on the trip.  How many children are going?  How many adults are going?  And how much do they cost?  How much did they pay for skates in all?

Information about the National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art Museum was conceived, founded, and endowed in 1937. The original neoclassical marble building was designed by John Russell Pope and opened to the public in 1941.
The original collection was made up of 21 masterpieces. Among these pieces are the Annunciation by Jan van Eyck, Titan’s Venus with a mirror and Raphael’s Alba Madonna, the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Western Hemisphere.
The collection of the National Gallery of Art is constantly growing. The museum has changed a lot since 1941, from the exhibition rooms, sculpture halls, information room, even the air-conditioning system has changed. These places are the interior of this amazing building.
The exterior has grown and prospered since that time. Also, reconstruction has occurred dramatically. Large office buildings now replace the small-scale brick houses that once were the urban core of the city.

ArtMuseumEntrance.jpg (50736 bytes)     Besides the exterior and interior changes the art itself has changed. The art in this building goes back to the 1300’s.
There are two buildings. The West building is the home of work between 1300 and 1900. The East building has 20,000ft of exhibition room and holds the 20th century art. The East and West buildings are connected by an underground passageway. Complete with waterfalls, gift shops, and a beautiful cafeteria.
