Information about the National Air and Space
Museum
Since
it was dedicated in 1976, the Smithsonian's National Air and
Space Museum has offered visitors a complete look at the
history of flight from the first successful airplane to the
present space capsules. There are 23 exhibit areas in which
artifacts and displays are organized. These artifacts range
from the Wright Brother's 1903 "Kitty Hawk Flyer"
and Charles Lindbergh's "Spirit of Saint Louis" to
actual moon stones that visitors can feel. All visitors can
enter a Skylab orbital workshop. Most of the air and
spacecraft displays were actually manned or used as backup
vehicles.
Other
exhibits include dozens of missiles, rockets, engines, medals,
and photos-all, which document both the technological and
historical achievements in air and space flight.
This
modern structure on the Mall lies directly in front of the
National Gallery. It is constructed of the Tennessee marble of
pinkish tint. The architecture differs greatly from the
neo-classicism of the other buildings.
Special attractions include the Albert Einstein Planetarium,
which presents various fascinating shows about our solar
system and the world beyond. A real treat is special films
about flight shown on a screen fifty feet high and seventy
feet wide in the Samuel Langley Theater. IMAX presentations
have such large images that the viewer is drawn into the
action on the screen.
Before leaving the museum, a visitor might want to stop at one
of the three gift shops to buy souvenirs.
