Information about the Lincoln Memorial

Lincoln.jpg (61221 bytes)   The Memorial was built to honor our16th president. The Lincoln Memorial is unique because it looks as much to the future as it does to the past. One of the interesting things about the monuments and memorials is that they often say more about the generation that built them as they do about the person or period they were originally intended to commemorate. The Lincoln Memorial really says much more about this nation in the wake of the Civil War. The generation that designed the Lincoln Memorial essentially constructed a highly idealized, colossal white-marble memorial to American democracy. It seems fair to suggest that another thing that makes the Lincoln Memorial unique is its power to continue to evolve as a symbol. For many Americans the Lincoln Memorial is a secular sacred temple commemorating the nation’s savior and first assassinated president. The Lincoln Memorial, reflective of the time it was built, has been able to mature with age into a true symbol of   freedom and unity.
Talk of a memorial began soon after Lincoln’s death, but it was years before construction began. While an early design was made there was no financial support behind it. The project stopped momentarily, but the idea did not feed away. Members of Congress kept the dream alive. By February 1911, a bill was passed establishing the Lincoln Memorial Commission. Two million dollars was set aside for the memorial. With such solid backing the Lincoln Memorial would finally get started. The Lincoln Memorial symbolizes many things to many different people. At its most basic level the Lincoln Memorial symbolizes the idea of freedom, As a powerful symbol of freedom, the Lincoln Memorial continues to serve as a light to the rest of the world.
