Information about the
National Marine Corps War Memorial

The national Iwo Jima Marine Corps War Memorial is in Washington D.C. The memorial is in remembrance of the marines who died in the battle for Iwo Jima, Japan. Out of the five men who rose the flag only three are living today.
On February 19th, 1945 the marines invaded Iwo Jima with an unsuccessful bombing campaign that lasted 72 hours. After the bombing they were commanded to take over Mount Surbachi, a mountain on the island of Iwo Jima. On the morning of the 23rd they started to climb the mountain. They reached the top at 10:30 a.m. and raised the American flag on top of the mountain. There was a second raising of the flag that was posed and photographed by Joe Rosenthal who won the Pulitzer Prize.
One of the events at the memorial is the Marine Sunshine Parade. The event is held on every Tuesday nights at 7:00 from June to August. It has a Marine Drum Brigade , Bugle Corps, and a Marine Silent Drill Platoon, all in seventy-five minutes a night.
The national Iwo Jima Marine War Memorial is one of the most famous World War II memorials of all time. I hope all of you will make it there one day.
