Fords Theatre is a national historic site. It was originally a Baptist church on Tenth Street in Washington D.C. In 1859 the forth Baptist Church was formed on thirteenth street, and it joined with the First Baptist church on Tenth Street, while it was being abandoned.
In 1861 John T. Ford came to Washington looking for a structure for a theatre. Ford leased the building on December 10, 1861 for five years with option to buy at the end of that period.
From its grand opening on March 19, 1862 was very successful. More and more people started coming when Lincoln attended the theatre on May 28, 1862. Later on April 14, 1865 while watching the play Our American Cousin he was assassinated by John Wilkes Boothe. He was from there taken to the Petersons home where he died. After Lincolns death the theatre was shut down.
Fords theatre was restored again in 1968. The theatre is still a performing theatre and a museum. In the museum are photographs, clothing, the assassins gun, and editorial cartoons.
