harbor4.JPG (127840 bytes)Information about Baltimore Harbor

In the year 1975, Baltimore was trying to reinvent itself. Baltimore was struggling to become a vibrant center for business, commerce, and comfortable living . People were thinking that the harbor could be considered a magnet for people. Baltimore Harbor was once an attraction to ships and trade. But the Baltimore Harbor was missing- a symbol, a trademark, and icon to link to the harbor.
Former Mayor William Donald Schaefer credits then Housing Commissioner Bob Embry with the idea to build a ship and place it in the Inner Harbor to draw people to the harbor.
The Waterfront Promenade is more than a sidewalk along the water, it makes Baltimore very unique. The Promenade is covering seven miles of shoreline of one of America’s urban bodies of water. The Promenade connects historic communities, such as Fells Point and Federal Hill, to downtown and harbor place. Baltimore’s characters are explained through five community markers. There are thousands of fact plaques which cover many historical, cultural, architectural, environmental and social histories. When you visit Baltimore Harbor you can relax in Canton and Fort McHenry or shop in downtown Inner Harbor or Little Italy. The harbor is good for all ages!
The Canton Waterfront Park has become a main attraction to people. There is some much to do at the park. You can just walk around, you could go fishing, go and launch your boat, or just enjoy the view of Fort McHenry or just simply watch the activities on the water. Also, there is a special place on the upper level of the fishing area for bricks. These bricks are for the families to celebrate their heritage on the water where so many people have lived and worked. And they are also for the family and friends to pay tribute to friends and relatives who have dedicated their lives to serving their country.
The Inner Harbor East, Little Italy, has a wonderful view of a two-level Promenade stretching all the way from Eastern Avenue Bridge to Columbus Center, past the new Inner Harbor East Marina, to Central Avenue- a few blocks from Fells Point. The engraved bricks are placed in a diamond pattern on the lower edge of the water along Lancaster Street. And the residents love Little Italy just to go and relax on the oasis on the waterfront.
The Museum of Industry, South Baltimore, anchors the southern terminus of the waterfront. You can also have your bricks placed on either the Museum’s new front porch or on the harbor’s walkway.
The Ravens Plaza will go along with the Coast Guard Plaza, the Bicentennial Plaza, Broadway Pier, Harbor East- Little Italy, and Canton Waterfront Park as a part of where brick buyers can place their engraved bricks on the waterfront walkway.
