The one-way, self visit to that main
Aquarium begins and also ends on Level 1. The Marine Mammal
Pavilion bridge is located at lobby level.
The Aquarium has 7 levels. Below is a brief description
Lobby
Level 1 - Ray Exhibit: Wings in the Water
There are dozens of stingrays in the exhibit , gliding and
turning in the 265,000 gallon pool that they share with
several species of small shark. Some of the small sharks are
collected from the ocean, but after a year in the exhibit they
are tagged and released back into the ocean.
Level 2 - Maryland: Mountains to the Sea
In this exhibit the gallery traces the water cycle from a
freshwater pond in the mountains in western Maryland through
the Tidal Marsh, into the Coastal Beach and out into the
deeper, and darker waters of the Atlantic. In the open
Allegheny Pond exhibit, visitors with a sharp eye might spot
painted and soft-shell turtles, many small fish, and
bullfrogs. Fresh water flows from ponds and streams to tidal
marshes on the coast. Then it mixes with salt water from the
sea. There are blue crabs, diamondback terrapin and a variety
of fish and invertebrates in the Tidal Marsh.
Level 3 - Surviving Through Adaptation
Mostly everyone has a favorite place to linger in this
exhibit. It could be with the electric eel, which is an Amazon
animal with shocking tendencies. Another favorite for many is
the giant Pacific octopus. If you are lucky you just might see
the octopus eating its favorite snack - blue crabs. Patient
visitors may be rewarded by a sight of tiny Jaw fish which
live in small burrows that they will dig. They may dart out to
grasp passing food items - or to steal small stones from
another jaw fish's burrow in this exhibit.
Still others are captivated by sturgeons, paddlefish, and gars
- primitive fishes which have not evolved or changed for more
than 70 million years.
Level
4 -includes Puffins, The Amazon River, The Atlantic Coral
Reef, and Shark- The Open Ocean. You can learn about each and
everyone of them.
Level
5 - Tropical Rain Forest
The Tropical Rain Forest includes many types of birds, small
monkeys, and many other things that are in the tropical rain
forest.
Seals - Outside Main Aquarium
Several seals live in this out door exhibit. Many of the seals
have been rehabilitated but cannot be returned to the sea.
Several times a day they feed and train the seals.
The many species of dolphins are actually
small toothed whales, like the Atlantic bottle nose dolphin
seen at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Dolphins bear live
young which are nursed by the mothers milk. They maintain a
constant body temperature and are warm-blooded, have lungs and
breathe air. Instead of a furry coat for warmth, dolphins have
a layer of blubber beneath their smooth skin. They have smooth
skin, a streamlined body, and powerful flukes that help them
survive in a water environment. In the search for eels, fish,
shrimp, and squid, a dolphin can dive as deep as 300 meters
(984 feet), but it does not stay under water for long periods
of time. Dolphins do not do like humans do and take a big
breath and hold it for swimming. Instead most of the oxygen is
not stored in the lungs it is stored in the blood and muscles.
The Dolphin Show - Amphitheater - is on level 1. From the main
Aquarium lobby, visitors cross the bridge to reach the Marine
Mammal Pavilion, which is where dolphin shows are scheduled
daily.
I hope that you enjoy my web sight about the
Baltimore Aquarium and that you have learned a lot.
